We live in an era where climate change is no longer just a plausible future but has become a reality. However, many factors are responsible for climate change but one of the unlikely candidates is old and unattended ships. Although recycling ships is a booming industry, ship recycling in India, like countries, is not very popular. Understanding the threat an unattended old ship poses to the environment and why recycling shipsis the need of the hour is essential. The damage an old vessel causes to the environment is unfathomable.

Here are a few of the damages these ships cause to our environment:-

Polluting the water bodies:- These unattended old vessels play a huge role in polluting water bodies. Abandoned ships worldwide are rusting away, causing the water bodies to get more polluted with each passing year. Ship recycling in India, and many other countries where it is not a popular practice, several abandoned ships are rusting away on different sea shores polluting the nearby waters with toxins. Our environment is not in a position to take in more water pollution.

Endangering marine life:- Boats are built using various synthetic materials and solutions, and as time passes, they leach chemicals and create a toxic environment for marine life. Chemicals like detergents, battery acid, TBT, etc., mess with water oxygen and ph levels and create an overall poisonous environment for marine life. Ship recycling in India and other countries in the world is vital because of its rivers and seas. These toxins are killing marine life left and right. And several marine life gets some harmful mutation, and some of these mutated marine lives or their product get consumed by humans, harming both.

Messing with Water Navigation:- It is essential to know that not practicing proper recycling of ship’s techniques does not just affect marine life but also endangers humans. These abandoned ships cause several accidents at sea often. These ships float on their own and mess with the navigation of other ships. During wartime, countries sank vessels or set them free to create obstacles for the enemy nation. So it is essential to understand if something is used as a warfare strategy, it must be perilous.

Destroying Natural Beauty:- Ship recycling in India-like countries is important because three sides are surrounded by seas and oceans, and tourism in these shoreside areas depends on its beauty. However, proper ship recycling is necessary to maintain natural beauty. Rusting ships on the seashore create an unpleasant sight for the tourist encouraging behaviors like littering and damaging public property.

It is time we understand an unattended ship’s role in damaging the environment and the importance of ship recycling companies for a sustainable future.
